At Mama Shelter 'Mama loves you, Mama feeds you'
At once urban and open to the city, Mama Shelter embraces the spirit of conviviality. No surprise, since it was created by the Trigano family. After Paris, Serge Trigano inaugurated establishments in Marseille, Istanbul, Lyon, and Bordeaux.
A Mama Shelter is decidedly different from other hotels. It’s a place of mingling, encounters, a lively spot with a bar, restaurants, and concerts that an eclectic clientele quickly embraced. Tourists, business travelers, and Parisians gather at Mama and on its iconic rooftop as soon as the good weather arrives.
Yet, a hotel designed by Starck paired with a restaurant menu by Senderens on Bagnolet Street in this outlying district of East Paris, nestled between housing blocks and the disused tracks of the petite ceinture, was no guaranteed success! That was without counting on the general enthusiasm, as Serge Trigano even managed to involve the head concierge of the Plaza Athénée, who was retiring, in the adventure.
If the room decor is dark to reinforce the urban refuge vibe, it's also to encourage us to spend time downstairs, where everything happens.
To keep prices reasonable, Mama Shelter admits to forgoing some small luxuries. There’s no bathtub, pool, spa, or room service, but the bedding is impeccable, and every room is equipped with an iMac.
The story goes that Philippe Starck went to the Saint-Ouen flea market to find mismatched chairs and various reclaimed elements to furnish the common areas, where the ceilings are chalk-graffitied.
Relax, you’re at Mama Shelter. “Mama loves you, Mama feeds you,” the brand’s lovely logo, an egg nestled between a chicken’s legs, poetically reminds us.
