Our selection for a unique stay in a capsule hotel
The capsule hotel (or cabin hotel) is a lodging concept born in Japan following the Osaka World Expo in the late 1970s. The principle involves staying in an ultra-minimalist accommodation, a sort of pod aligned in a shared dormitory. The room of a capsule hotel is thus limited to a cabin of about two square meters, just enough space to accommodate a bed, alarm clock, internet connection, outlets, and depending on the category, a television. In addition to your cabin, you can enjoy a sento (a Japanese public bath), a cyber café where WiFi is free, small dining options, and lockers with everything you need to change.
Originally, these capsule hotels provided overnight solutions for Japanese workers or partygoers who had no other choice after missing the last train. While they were long reserved for men only, this is changing. With very attractive prices (starting at €30) and locations in the bustling districts of cities, these establishments now attract tourists and women. It has become possible to book in advance, and some hotels are even exclusively dedicated to women (e.g., Nadeshiko Shibuya and Nine Hours Woman Kanda, Tokyo). Mixed hotels also allocate a specific floor for them (MyCUBE by Mystays Asakusa Kuramae in Tokyo or Asahi Plaza Shinsaibashi in Osaka), and, quite rarely, some even accept couples in double cabins (Kiba, Tokyo). The concept continues to evolve with the First Cabin Akihabara (Tokyo), which offers a space where one can stand upright.
Strongly linked to modern Japanese culture, capsule hotels fascinate foreign tourists in Japan and Asia. In recent years, hotels -hostels or higher-end ones- have opened their capsules in Europe, such as at the Paris or London airports, Naples, or in major cities like Amsterdam, Singapore, Colombo, Moscow, or Sydney. Since 2018, Switzerland has welcomed its first establishment in Lucerne.
