Sleeping in a TV tower
Presentation
Practical information
A unique building, admired in the Czech Republic and abroad
An hour's drive north of Prague, in the heart of the Liberec region, the iconic Ještěd transmitter and hotel attract tourists from all over the world.
Imagined in reinforced concrete by architect Karel Hubáček, the hyperboloid shape of the tower naturally extends the silhouette of the hill (91 m) while housing a television transmitter capable of withstanding the extreme climatic conditions of the region. At an altitude of 1012 meters, while the summit can be reached in a few minutes by cable car, strong winds often necessitate the use of a car!
For the originality of his work, Karel Hubáček was awarded an international architecture prize in the spring of 1969, the prestigious Auguste Perret Prize awarded by the International Union of Architects. A pride that the Czechs never tire of, as in 2006, the original building was classified as a cultural monument and even voted construction of the century.
In the upper floors of the tower, a restaurant and the Ještěd hotel house about twenty rooms with furniture specially designed by Otakar Binar. A breathtaking view of Bohemia and parts of Poland and Germany.
