An old royal palace turned into the Ministry of the Interior
Presentation
Practical information
Relive the departures to the New World.
In the historic center of Lisbon, this recent Pousada (opened in 2015) overlooks the Tagus River and the Praça do Comércio, the famous square in the Baixa district where offices managing the port's activities were once located. Before the 1755 earthquake, this grandiose square was actually called Terreiro de paço (Palace Square), in honor of the royal residence that opened onto the square.
It is precisely in this former royal palace that the hotel has opened its 90 rooms. This historic 18th-century building, recognizable by its saffron-yellow facade and multiple white arcades, later became the Ministry of the Interior, the city's essential center of power. Today, one is surprised to discover a hidden pool under the rooftops and a terrace for sunbathing away from prying eyes!
A member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, the hotel is enhanced by 18th-century high ceilings, artworks illustrating Lisbon's rich historical past (on loan from various museums), and a Lisboeta restaurant led by Michelin-starred chef Tiago Bonito.
Of the 90 rooms, the views are stunning, overlooking the rooftops of Baixa Pombalina, Saint George's Castle, or the Tagus River. Everything inspires us to hop on a bike and pedal all the way to Belém.
Good to know: Pousada, a hotel arranged in a city and a historically significant monument (castles, palaces, forts, monasteries) or located in a typical natural setting.
