Sleeping in a corsair's house
Presentation
Practical information
Our night in a corsair mansion, with feet in the water.
Roscoff, city of Léon, a city of character, was born with the sea.
A city of privateers serving the king and then a smuggling port starting in 1750... its motto illustrates this period "A Rei A Skei Atao" (strike hard, strike strong, strike always).
Wandering through its alleys and narrow streets is like going back in time, far, very far, to Henri IV or Mary Stuart!
The 4* hotel where we took a break, Le Temps de Vivre, dates back to that era, and the reason we chose it is truly all the history that its thick walls still keep hidden from us. It belonged to wealthy merchants and shipowners from Roscoff, of course, but also to privateers!
To its left, a narrow street leads us directly to a slipway. From there, we understand the importance of the breakwaters protecting the facades. The sea is at the foot of the building, and here in this corner of North Finistère, it is magnificent. From our room (number 4) on the first floor, we hear it, observe its rhythm, its changing colors, and breathe its iodized air. A whole world of calm in the shelter of a beautiful residence, a healthy way to recharge one's batteries!
On a peninsula of the Bay of Morlaix, Roscoff has other great assets: the wonderful neighboring island of Batz, not to be missed under any circumstances, its shellfish fishing port, a departure point by ferry to England or Ireland, a casino, a nautical center, agricultural lands (including the Johnnies' onions), a marine biology research center, and thalassotherapy. The first thalassotherapy center in France was born here!
