Sleeping in a lighthouse in Finistère
Presentation
Practical information
Rooms with a view between the Iroise Sea and the English Channel
Off the coast of Northern Finistère, a place both enigmatic and romantic is open to the public. On Île Vierge, next to the large lighthouse, the historic small lighthouse of the island has been transformed into an exceptional eco-lodge.
Commissioned in 1845, the small lighthouse (or old lighthouse) was replaced fifty years later by a second lighthouse, the tallest stone lighthouse in the world! 82.5 meters high and with a range of 27 miles (50 km in clear weather), it was necessary to secure this particularly rugged and dangerous coastline. This lighthouse has since become the emblem of the Pays des Abers.
The small lighthouse, which also served as housing for the 75 keepers who succeeded one another until the last shift in 2010, has found a new purpose. Transformed into an eco-responsible lodge, it is powered by rainwater, wind energy, and photovoltaic energy. Over three years, stonemasons, artistic blacksmiths, and carpenters have beautifully enhanced this heritage: stone vault, granite slabs, well, fireplaces, and even, as a nod to the traditional furniture of Northern Finistère, two box beds with doors dating from the 18th and 19th centuries (readapted to current dimensions for more comfort).
The nine guests who have the privilege of sleeping in this lighthouse will also have the unique opportunity to access the top of the tower. From the dome, fully restored and glazed, at 33 meters high, a panorama as wonderful as it is unique will open up to you over the Coast of Legends, the Iroise Sea, the English Channel, and the large lighthouse.
Do you know of another place in the world where two lighthouses classified as Historical Monuments stand side by side?
