Sleep on a private island
Presentation
Practical information
And if we suspended time? In the Bay of Morlaix, off the coast of Carantec, the Ile Louët or Isle of Louët is a breathtaking site.
In this lovely month of June 2015, we skip school and head due west to reach Carantec in this northern Finistère that we love so much. At Kelenn Beach, we board with the children and their Grandmother on an oyster farmer’s barge. Passing the Saint Carantec rock, we can already make out in the distance the Château du Taureau and the much-coveted Ile Louët or Isle of Louët!
Tonight we will sleep on this rocky peak that houses the famous lighthouse with its white silhouette and the keeper’s house with blue shutters. The lighthouse was automated in the 1960s, it still works and remains the property of the Compagnie des Phares et Balises. During those years, keepers and their families took turns living on the island, housed in the keeper's house and the outbuildings. These will be ours for the duration of this wonderful adventure in the Bay of Morlaix.
More than a year after booking this unusual night, it is time to dock. We climb the few steps and the magic of the place instantly works. The Tourist Office entrusted us with two keys, we wonder which doors they might open… The lovely house, of course, then at the end of the small vegetable garden, the old pigsty which now houses the toilets. And the fisherman’s shed, now turned into a bathroom with a spectacular view!
On an island, time flows differently. Here it passes gently and with the rhythm of the tides. We admire the changing view of the islets that appear or disappear, the Pen al Lann coast, the color of the sky, the comings and goings of fishing boats, catamarans from the sailing school, or sailboats. Always to the rhythm of the seagulls’ cries. At low tide, we observe marine life between anemones and a little shrimp fishing. The current and the cool water will deter our swimming desires, anyway it’s time to light the barbecue, mackerel, and sea bass caught (by others) not far from here will delight us!
At nightfall, the lights of Saint-Pol glitter, the lighthouse lights up and the full moon offers us a wonderful spectacle. A last glance at the lighthouse before bed for the young sailors, we all have dreams of adventure in our heads. And the desire to quickly return and lay down our bags on this little island.
✯ Open from early April to late October ✯
