Budget, ecological and activist hotel
Presentation
Practical information
Let's experience the Solar Hotel and become actors in sustainable tourism.
The times are changing, and so are hotels. In Paris, the Solar Hotel has been shaking up the industry's norms for nearly 10 years, striving to change mindsets. Affordable, ecological, and activist, these are the key principles of this budget-friendly hotel located in the Daguerre district, a charming and lively area of the 14th arrondissement.
Franck Laval, a committed environmentalist and founder of the NGO Écologie Sans Frontière, which initiated the Grenelle Environment Forum, transformed the former Hôtel des Voyageurs in 2009 into an innovative and exemplary site. From the 100% organic breakfast to water recovery systems, recycling initiatives, solar panels lighting the facade, bike loans, and the brand-new vegetable garden, numerous actions have been undertaken with the goal of REDUCING: targets include -75% energy consumption, -50% water consumption, and 90% of the hotel's waste sorted and recycled.
Among the other strengths developed are the publication of the first hotel carbon footprint report, commitment to the health and well-being of employees and guests (including limiting electromagnetic waves during sleep), and encouraging good habits among an already environmentally-conscious clientele.
This civic-minded approach is also evident in the hotel's neighborhood. The hotel is open and community-oriented, hosting concerts and art exhibitions by local artists, with residents stopping by monthly to collect organic food baskets prepared by an AMAP. Several local and international environmental organizations, such as the NGO Sea Shepherd, are hosted or hold conferences at the hotel.
As a showcase of sustainable solutions, the Solar Hotel demonstrates that investments in good practices are both economically viable and ethical. This commitment continues with the creation of a training program for hospitality professionals in sustainable development, Solar Formation.
As Franck Laval says, "2017 will be the year of Ecologization, the third hotel revolution."
So let us also become engaged participants.
