Unusual inn on the mountainside
Presentation
Practical information
Take to the heights and reach the 7th heaven in Appenzell.
When the small country of Appenzell, one of the smallest cantons in Switzerland, reaches new heights, it takes you to Ebenalp, the starting point for very beautiful hikes.
For in this region of Alpstein, where massive limestone rock formations rise almost magically up to 2500m, the landscapes are breathtaking.
Two paths will lead you to the very picturesque Berggasthaus Aescher. A 3-hour hike -with a challenging level- with the stunning Säntis as a backdrop or a few minutes via the cable car departing from Wasseraunen.
From Ebenalp (1640m), breathtaking panoramas over Appenzell, Saint-Gall, Thurgau, or Lake Constance before passing through the prehistoric Wildkirchli caves, inhabited by Neanderthals 40,000 years ago... The hanging path runs alongside the tiny red hermit church clinging to the mountain before opening up to this incredible sight, the famous mountain inn Aescher!
This 170-year-old guesthouse is nestled in the mountainside. Its restaurant is highly appreciated by locals, with its Appenzell specialties (including rösti with dried meat from the region) playing a big part. What is less known is that you can spend a night there under a warm feather duvet from May to the end of October (different dormitories and double rooms).
Appenzell delights us with its pastures, its charming village famous for its signs, its cheese, bells, Appenzeller Alpenbitter (a bit like Ricola candies, 42 Swiss plants for a secret recipe, but here it's a 29° alcohol), poyas, but we still don't understand why there are so many garden gnomes. If you know, tell us!
✯ Open from early May to late October from Monday to Saturday. Closed on Sundays ✯
