Sleeping in a mountain refuge in Valais
Presentation
Practical information
The new Mont Rose Hut, a crystal in the ice for accomplished mountaineers
Night out of the ordinary at 2883m. In the heart of the Gorner, Grenz, and Mont Rose glaciers, surrounded by the impressive peaks of the Valais Alps, the nouvelle cabane du Mont Rose resembles a piece of crystal.
The story begins in 2003, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich). Determined to bring a sustainable project to life, it then proposed to the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) the creation of an innovative mountain hut in a delicate ecosystem. The location chosen was that of the century-old Mont Rose hut, which was in urgent need of renovation.
Planned over 6 years and built in 21 weeks, this architectural achievement is unique due to its location, the application of cutting-edge technologies, and sustainable development: energy autonomy of nearly 90%, with the remaining 10% provided by a thermal power station fueled by rapeseed oil and a heat recovery system, wastewater microfiltration, and the reuse of greywater for flushing toilets. Meltwater is stored in a large reservoir carved into the rock, offering running water throughout the year. A luxury appreciated by the 120 guests who can share the 14 rooms, 14 sinks, and 4 showers!
Its protective envelope in shiny aluminum and 100 solar panels give it its unmistakable crystal-like appearance.
Today, the nouvelle cabane du Mont Rose (2883m) allows for research in the field of energy control and regulation, naturally bringing together scientists and mountaineers from around the world.
A good reason to get (back) into sport, as from this high-tech cabin, the magic of the Alps is yours to discover.
