An experience that lets you step into the shoes of General Hannibal

Practical information
On the trail of Hannibal: a new cross-border bivouac, serving as a bridge for a shared history.
Natural border between Savoie and Piedmont, the Clapier pass experiences a certain commotion. This is not new, as the Romans and all categories of travelers, merchants, brigands, armed troops, and pilgrims have used this route for a very long time. General Hannibal Barca is also said to have used it with his army and elephants during his march on Rome.
The route of this epic journey, which many historians consider plausible, has become the starting point for collaboration between two municipalities, beyond borders.
On either side of the mountain, two villages historically and culturally linked, Bramans in France and Giaglione in Italy, have designed a tourist trail connecting their municipalities: from the village of Bramans, passing through Planay, then ascending the Savine valley to the Clapier pass, where the descent into the magnificent Val di Susa leads to the endpoint, Giaglione.
This route, named 'In the Footsteps of Hannibal,' stretches over 25 km, but divided into seven sections (from 1h to 4h30 of walking or mountain biking), it is accessible to the greatest number. Interpretation panels about Hannibal's passage, a treasure hunt, a vacation booklet, a guidebook—everything has been designed to make these hikes as fun as they are educational!
The highlight of this route, the new Hannibal alpine bivouac, has been installed. Perched at 2477m altitude, ungarded but open in winter and summer, it can accommodate -free of charge- up to 8 people. From its large bay window, one can admire the Italian valley, and thanks to a zenithal opening, enjoy a sparkling natural spectacle, a night under the celestial vault!
