Camp and listen to the stag's bellow
Presentation
Practical information
Sleep to the sound of deer mating in a true bivouac.
Every autumn, the impressive bellow of the stag resounds in the forests.
Why does he roar, you might ask? It’s mating season, a time when the dominant male (nicknamed Jacky!) seeks to drive away the younger males from his herd of hinds. If this intimidation attempt isn’t enough, impressive clashes where the animals’ antlers collide may follow. It’s an intense and exhausting period for the king of the forest.
The herd of about sixty stags and hinds living in semi-freedom is particularly active late in the evening and at dawn. By staying in a 'Safari bow' tent just a few meters from the rutting area and facing the large deer plain (54 hectares), you'll have front-row seats to witness this magnificent spectacle at one of the best observation sites for this phenomenon.
All this in the company of nature guides who will introduce you to the experience and ensure your safety and that of the animals.
This passion is also shared by the competitors of the National Stag Bellowing (or Roaring) Championship, created by the Sainte Croix park in 2013. To hear competitors face off by imitating presence, pursuit, victory, and longing calls, you'll have to wait until mid-September.
Are you tempted to observe, listen to, and understand the deer, but would prefer more comfortable yet unusual accommodations? Know that two canvas and wooden cabins on stilts overlooking the plain and ponds are open from April to November. They offer a breathtaking view of the 150 animals living in semi-freedom! The four lodges des Grands Cerfs can accommodate up to 5 people from mid-March to mid-November.
