Sleeping in a submarine

Presentation Practical information
Night in a submersible to dive into the confined life of submarine crew members.

After years of silence at the bottom of the oceans, amidst the Cold War and NATO missions between 1967 and 2000, NSCM Onondoga (1) joined the Bas Saint-Laurent region in 2009.
Its last journey, coming from Halifax, naturally led it to the historic site of Pointe-au-Père (formerly Musée de la Mer). A place steeped in maritime history since the arrival of Europeans in America via the Saint-Laurent, the main access and transport route for people and goods. With the presence of ice, fogs, and reefs, the dangers on the river were so numerous that a pilot station was established there as early as 1805 to guide ships to Quebec.

Albéric Gallant, the chief submariner, will be your guide for a night on board.
At 8 PM, you board this Oberon-class submarine through the forward torpedo room. Hard to miss, one of them is still firmly attached to the ceiling! Then you sneak into the bunk room, cross the officers' mess, the kitchens, the captain's small cabin, and the officers' quarters before reaching the heart of the submarine: the control room with its two periscopes and red lights, and the engine room. To stay silent, the engines are mounted on rubber.
Tour, anecdotes, levers, combat station, evacuation drill—he will explain everything and even give you your submariners' insignia, 'The Dolphins.'

Slip into the shoes of a sailor in training and spend a night aboard the Onondaga, a unique experience offered in Canada from early June to early September (other dates available for groups).

(1) NSCM stands for His Majesty's Canadian Ship and Onondaga
in honor of the Native American people settled on both sides of the Saint-Laurent, in what are now the province of Ontario and the state of New York, members of the Iroquois Five Nations.
