Sleeping in an unusual hotel in Canada
Presentation
Practical information
Sleep at one of the four corners of the world.
Located northeast off the coast of Newfoundland, Fogo Island is said by the Flat Earth Society to be one of the four corners of the world.
With nearly 3,000 inhabitants, who for generations have lived off cod fishing, this small rocky island is a destination that is not chosen by chance. Only the Farewell ferry will take you back to your daily life.
At 16, Zita Cobb, the only daughter in a family of seven children, used to working alongside her father, a fisherman from the island, received a scholarship to study at the University of Ottawa and left this piece of land.
After making a fortune in fiber optics and traveling, she returned to her native island, her head full of philanthropic projects shared with two of her brothers: to create a foundation, the Shorefast Foundation , to promote local traditions and knowledge, to revitalize this rural area by creating jobs through tourism and the arts.
A successful bet with the collaboration of architect Todd Saunders and Chef Murray Mac Donald, both Newfoundlanders, who personally contributed to the success of this project.
"Fogo Island Arts," the artist-in-residence program, has caught the attention of the world's best artists. The first four stunning art studios, set on the rocky terrain, and the rehabilitation of traditional houses leave no one indifferent.
The opening in June 2013 of the Fogo Island Inn, a luxury hotel with contemporary, bright, and 100% ecological architecture, completed the project supported by the entire community of the island.
Carpenters, cabinetmakers, and island artisans renovated houses and created furniture using shipbuilding techniques. Women finally had their talents as experts in hooked rugs, knitting, and quilts - those quilted and stitched bedspreads - recognized, and nearly 68 islanders were employed at the hotel.
Anchored in untamed nature, like an ocean liner facing the sea, the 29 suites and art gallery open onto the Atlantic.
The view from your room? The ocean's whims, icebergs, and whales. Breathtaking!
Unless you prefer the 360° panorama offered from the rooftop hot baths.
In Fogo, they like to say there are seven seasons, our four seasons, and those of the berries, the icebergs, and the ice. We are at the end of the world.
