Urban shelters around Bordeaux
Presentation
Practical information
A collection of amazing shelters for wandering souls.
When the Bordeaux-based collective Bruit du frigo tests new ways to escape the city or seeks to reinvent it for better appropriation, we witness the creation of striking peri-urban shelters.
Shelters for hikers rediscovering the outskirts of Bordeaux, for those who want to share a unique experience, an unusual adventure, or simply enjoy a break from daily life. These shelter-works are open to everyone and offered free of charge for one night.
These shelters, with their original and spartan design—reminiscent of those found during mountain races—are placed in locations representative of Bordeaux to better surprise us.
By clicking on the links, you will learn all about the symbolism of each one, and it’s up to you to choose which charm you will succumb to.

This initiative has been led and designed since 2010 by the collective Bruit du frigo, directed by Yvan Detraz, in collaboration with Zébra3/Buy-Sellf—which notably creates the shelters—Bordeaux Metropole, and the host localities. An ever-growing audience, loyal and engaged, eagerly awaits this summer rendezvous to be surprised again and again.
To book, it’s now all online on the Les Refuges Périurbains website. Reservations are open from May to November (note: pre-bookings open on the 1st of each month for the following month).
The Refuges project earned the Bruit du frigo association the 2016 Award for Peri-urban Innovation - Living Together, Social Cohesion, and Culture category, from the Ministry of Regional Planning, Rurality, and Local Authorities. That year, more than 5,000 people stayed there for free.

The adventure continues as new shelters regularly emerge! The latest addition, Neptunea, opened in September 2017.
