From the industrial reinforced concrete building to the gentle intentions of the Mama Shelter Bordeaux
The transformation of the 'Gas Tower' and its beacon-pylon in Saint-Christoly square in the historic center of Bordeaux is complete.
For over 70 years, this listed building housed the municipal gas and electricity board and is now part of the 20th-century real estate heritage.
The 5th Mama Shelter, a conceptual hotel created by Serge Trigano and designed in Bordeaux by Philippe Starck, deserved an extraordinary location. The reinforced concrete structure from the 1930s has been preserved; Raoul Jourde caused a scandal in his time! On the ground floor, 400 m2 without partitions barely suffice to house the entire Starck universe. A bar topped with its now-famous necklace of multicolored buoys, a pizzeria, and a 'show kitchen' to enjoy the cooking spectacle. Not to mention the giant foosball table for playing with ten people.
The Mama Shelter concept sometimes irritates but also excites. To guarantee an urban and multicultural vibe and take care of us at a reasonable price, the spa, hammam, bathtub, and room service have been set aside. The Malabar-colored rooms, hanging carnival masks, and 27' iMacs on the wall have not stormed the 47-meter-high tower, unfortunately. But safety decided otherwise. We make up for it with the terrace and its restaurant on the 6th floor, offering Bordeaux and its cathedral within reach. Magical!
