Unusual accommodation in England
Presentation
Practical information
A modern version of fishermen's huts on an English beach.
For its second holiday residence, Living Architecture takes you to the seaside.
This project in Dungeness, south of London, is the work of the NORD office. Between Folkestone and Hastings, amidst lighthouses and the terminus of a coastal steam train.
This vast pebble beach dotted with hardy plants in vivid colors is a rugged and poetic landscape. In reference to the tiny wooden fishermen's huts - often owned by artists - the young Scottish architectural firm created a contemporary structure that retains both the colors and lines of the environment.
The three simple huts are unified by black bitumen cladding. Grey concrete, white wood, hints of lime green or poppy red, and a purple floor for the interior. During the warmer seasons, the glass doors of the kitchen, bedroom, or dining room can open, letting in the precious sunlight and bringing the soothing sea within reach.
The largest of the huts houses the bedrooms (including one on the 1st floor) and the living room. Between the kitchen and the dining room, grouped in the third hut, one of the house's three bathrooms stands alone as its own hut. These three interconnected spaces provide all the comfort for 8 people and ever-changing views of the pebble beach of Dungeness, designated as a nature reserve.
