Unusual arty hotel in Nice
Presentation
Practical information
An open hotel for contemporary artists nestled a stone's throw from the Promenade des Anglais.
Nice, a beautiful 19th-century historical residence, a freestone building with a classic name, Hotel WindsoR.
Nothing special?
Think again, because this hotel is unlike any other.
Rooms, corridors, staircases, elevator, and garden are entrusted to contemporary French and international artists. This "Artist Rooms" project was born in 1987 during the Documenta in Kassel, which Bernard Redolfi, the owner, attended.
Today, the hotel features romantic fresco rooms signed by Antoine Baudoin and 27 artist rooms decorated by Ben, François Molleret, Jean Le Gac, Gotfried Honegger, Olivier Mosset, Choi Jeong Hwa, and many more.
The artists play with materials, furniture, colors, volumes, and humor! to turn the room they are entrusted with into a unique work in this hotel, which is as much akin to a studio as it is to a gallery open to the city.
Specifically? Ben covered the room with colorful, tagged words that will illustrate your nights. In room 57, Claudio Parmigiani opted for the minimalism of a gold room; gilded with gold leaf, it is 'simply' cubic. François Molleret chose "yellow sun rays" for room 59. For room 52, Charlemagne Palestine favored the accumulation of objects, a heap of stuffed animals for his "altar to Babar."
As a bonus, the entrance hall hosts contemporary creations by the invited artist every year. A hotel-gallery, in short.
Hammam, sauna, balneotherapy, treatments and massages, a tropical garden for summer breakfasts, or a fireplace lounge for drinks, a hotel for art lovers, a lovely stop on the French Riviera.
