Boat perched on the rooftops of London
Presentation
Practical information
A strange boat has landed on the roof of the Queen's Elizabeth Hall.
On the roof of the Queen Elizabeth Hall, at the Southbank Centre, a strange boat is moored, overlooking the void. This boat is the result of a competition launched by Living Architecture, Artangel, in association with the Southbank Centre.
Architect David Kohn and artist Fiona Banner responded to the commission by creating a place, on one of London’s most prominent sites, where two people can stay for an unusual night. They drew inspiration from Joseph Conrad’s novella Heart of Darkness, and its boat Le Roi des Belges on which Conrad traveled up the Congo River at the end of the 19th century. Today, the lookout boat observes the Thames and London’s urban hustle and bustle while hosting writers and musicians.
For more information about the construction of this unique room, you can check out Vimeo (Time-lapse video).
The Queen Elizabeth Hall has been under renovation since the end of 2015. The construction work is scheduled to end in May 2017.
A Room for London: Roi des Belges is therefore in enforced hibernation until further notice.

Comments
This project, launched in 2012, was so successful that it could have been booked 100 times more than available! The team members therefore decided to extend the experience at the same location for 2013, 2014, and 2015. A room for London will likely travel afterward. Another London building or outside of London? For now, we don't know, but you can follow their Twitter account to stay updated on this project.
Nota Bene: since 2014, bookings are sold quarterly. To be fairer compared to the "first come, first served" system at the beginning, it is now a lottery, and the simplest way is to subscribe to their newsletter to be ready at the right time.
