Living with your feet in the sand
Presentation
Practical information
Enchanted and poetic languor one hour from Lisbon.
Let’s cast off between land and sky, an hour south of the bustle of the white city.
To reach this enchanted escape, one crosses the Sado estuary by ferry—one of the few Portuguese rivers that flows from south to north—or follows the stretches of dunes and rice fields of the natural reserve.
On this wild land, four huts await chic Robinsons in search of absolute tranquility. Because Casas Na Areia, literally houses with their feet in the sand, is an ode to slowness in a paradise of blond sand dunes.
Designed as a vacation home divided into four hubs around the swimming pool, these small cabins were built in a minimalist style on the remains of a fishing hamlet. Open for a stay in harmony with nature, one moves barefoot in the sand, as in the spectacular main house that hosts the kitchen and the shared living space.
Andreia and João Rodrigues entrusted this creation to architect Manuel Aires Mateus, who brought their vision to life on this miraculously preserved land. He drew on the techniques, craftsmanship, and raw materials of the Comporta reserve (wood, reeds, thatch, and pine) before introducing modern comforts, including the incredible idea of underfloor heating integrated beneath the sand... for year-round vacations at Casas Na Areia.
Manuel Aires Mateus' project was chosen to represent Portugal at the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale.
Five minutes away, discover the Cabanas No Rio to cast off together.
