Sleeping in an unusual hotel in Spain
Presentation
Practical information
The avant-garde hotel by Frank Gehry amidst the vineyards.
The architect Frank Gehry chose the vineyards of the small medieval village of Elciego, in Rioja Alavesa in northern Spain, to open his first hotel at the end of 2006. A bold, futuristic hotel for this American architect of the Dancing House in Prague (1992-95), the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles (1989), or the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao (1996).
This "21st-century Spanish castle," as the estate's owners like to call it, combines the more than 150-year-old cellars of the former building with the avant-garde structures of the hotel wrapped in titanium ribbons (1800m2) with pinkish, silver, and golden reflections, the colors of the Marques de Riscal bottles; pink like the wine's hue, silver for the capsule, and gold for the mesh that envelops it all.
This sumptuous 5-star hotel, nestled amidst the vineyards, offers 43 spacious rooms and suites spread across two buildings, each with a unique view of Elciego, the valley, and the surrounding centuries-old vineyards. It features furniture pieces by Gehry or other renowned designers such as Alvar Aalto, Verner Panton.
The unmissable "Wine Bar" for tasting Marques de Riscal wines is set in the old cellar, and two restaurants, the Michelin-starred "Marques de Riscal" and "Bistro 1860," offer modern and traditional dishes.
A luxury establishment, the Hotel Marques de Riscal naturally offers a Caudalie spa, the creator of "vinotherapy" grape-based treatments.
