Church transformed into a luxury hotel in Mechelen
Presentation
Practical information
Under the vaults of a Flemish church.
Located fifteen minutes from Brussels, Martin's Patershof welcomes you in a former neo-Gothic convent. Sheltered by these stone walls from another century, give in to the temptation of comfort.
It was in 1863 that the Minor Brothers of Mechelen, in Flanders, began constructing their convent. The community remained there for more than a hundred years before deciding to put it up for sale in the late 1990s.
Since 2009, the deconsecrated building has housed a sumptuous hotel. Martin's Patershof deserves its four stars. Its rooms are far from monastic: the prestigious architecture, with its pointed arches, and the tranquil luxury of the bedding and furniture invite you to indulge endlessly in the sin of laziness. The play of light touching your bed at sunrise alone makes the trip worthwhile.
Less known than its nearby neighbor Brussels, Mechelen (Malines in French) has nothing to be ashamed of in comparison; it is even one of the most touristic Flemish cities, an ideal weekend destination. With more than 300 classified buildings and monuments, Mechelen proudly boasts being listed four times as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The must-sees? Strolling through the pedestrian streets, diving into the history of the old beguinages (the Grand Beguinage and the Small Beguinage), discovering the charming small squares and the Grand Place (Grote Markt) surrounded by buildings partly dating back to the 16th century, climbing to the top of the dizzying tower of Saint Rumbold's Cathedral, and learning all about beer by visiting the local Het Anker brewery! And you won't miss the Mechelen Cuckoo, the city's culinary specialty.
