Unusual night at sea
Presentation
Striped in red, striped in white, with its feet in the water... a lighthouse, a real one!
We all dreamed, at one time or another, of spending the night at Pierres Noires, La Vieille, Kéréon, or even at the phare du Four. Alone in the world, perched on a piece of rock, and water, nothing but water, 360° all around! All that's missing is the storm and the Plisson family to immortalize the moment ;-)
Do you know the Roter Sand, off the coast of Bremerhaven?
And yet, with an aesthetic as iconic as that of the Créac'h, the phare du Roter Sand revolutionized the small world of unique accommodations over 15 years ago. A true technical feat at the time of its construction (1885), it was the very first lighthouse to be built at water level, with foundations 22 meters deep. In 1964, the lighthouse was abandoned and decommissioned for safety reasons. In 1987, a long restoration project began, and it was only in 1999 that it reopened to the public. A bit over 5000 day visitors and 800 overnight guests take advantage of this highly atypical environment each year. Accommodating between 4 and 6 people, comfort is rudimentary: no heating, no electricity; but if the schedule is always fully booked as soon as reservations open, it is surely not for the cozy aspect of the getaway.
30 miles from the coast, about 2.5 hours of navigation, the expression "alone in the world" takes on its full meaning.
Far better than Leonardo at the bow of his transatlantic, your only spectators will be the seagulls passing by!
Important update: The lighthouse is no longer open to the public. The foundation for the preservation of the phare du Roter Sand had planned in 2015 to host guests aboard the LEV TAIFUN. The season was scheduled to run from June 20 to August 23, but most outings were canceled due to unpredictable weather.
At the beginning of 2016, the association is still considering whether or not to launch a new campaign for the coming year.
