Halfway between an oil platform and an offshore lighthouse
Presentation
Practical information
Perched on the hurricane's path, sharks as neighbors.
The Frying Pan Tower is the extraordinary place to experience an unforgettable maritime adventure in international waters.
Built according to the designs of the old Texan oil platforms, the "Texas tower," this offshore lighthouse was a landmark for sailors and fishermen navigating the shallow, fish-rich waters of the Frying Pan Shoals, off the coast of North Carolina.
Modern navigation systems (GPS and other radars) rendered it obsolete, and it was abandoned in the 2000s.
Richard Neal fell in love with it in 2010 and bought it from the government. Since then, supported by volunteers, he has worked on its renovation and welcomes those who want to try an original adventure.
Landing is done by helicopter or boat. Nothing on the horizon but the vastness of the sea: the coast is 50 km away. All the charm of the place, which its manager himself describes as bizarre, lies in the constant sense of disorientation it provides. The interior equipment has not changed and recalls the not-so-distant time when coast guards took turns watching ships through the large bay windows.
Lobster or barracuda fishing, spearfishing, boating, no one gets bored at the Frying Pan Tower. Always passionate, Richard is there to convince even the most skeptical to take part in his crazy renovation project. Some nights, the lighthouse is lit: as its light gets lost in the waves, it fascinates both young and old alike.
