Sleeping in a former hospice
Presentation
Practical information
From the Hospice Gantois to the Hermitage Gantois.
This 5-star hotel in Lille can be explored like one reads a history book.
Its past takes us back to 1462, when Jean de la Cambe, known as "gantois" because he was from Ghent, founded a hospice in Lille where he served as alderman. Thirteen people were housed, fed, and cared for by the Sisters of Saint Augustine. This mission lasted in various forms for nearly half a century... until 1995!
In 2003, this ensemble, classified as a Historic Monument, saw a revival; its three buildings—one Gothic and two Baroque—house the 5-star hotel recognizable by its yellow and red facade. These colors were inherited from the Spaniards during their domination of Flanders.
Today, visitors can admire the library (formerly the laundry room), the sickroom, and the cloister, which have retained their old-world charm. Period fireplaces and terracotta tiles evoke the site's history in certain rooms, some of which were once the cells occupied by the sisters.
The 72 rooms and suites are distributed around peaceful courtyards and gardens. The establishment features a piano bar, a Flemish brasserie called L'estaminet, and a gourmet restaurant.
In 2015, 17 new rooms and a spa will open. Treatments, a pool, and a sauna are located 5 minutes from the Grand Place.
To discover this Lille gem, guided tours are held on Tuesdays by L'Association du Musée Hospitalier Régional de Lille.
