The iconic Ice Hotel, a fascinating snow and ice project!
The story of this famous snow and ice hotel begins in the late 1980s in this remote area, 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, in Swedish Lapland.
On the banks of the Torne River and its crystal-clear waters, a snow and ice sculpture workshop sparked the interest of so many participants that, due to insufficient accommodations, some of them had to sleep with their creations... After a few safety instructions and armed with good sleeping bags, the slightly crazy idea of the first ice hotel was born.
A redesign every year
Far from the 60 m2 that made it up originally, the hotel now covers 5,500 m2, and the process is well-established. Every spring, 5,000 tons of ice are harvested from the riverbanks; they will serve the following November as bricks for constructing this unique hotel. The entrance buildings, the Ice Bar, and the church will be built using metal structures covered with snow and ice. Masons, artists, and designers from all over the world—about a hundred people—work in shifts during November to bring this hotel to life in just one month, as unique as it is ephemeral: chainsaws, gouges, chisels, and irons—all tools are used to meet the challenge at temperatures never above -10° (down to -38° recorded in December 2013).
The French duo from Ateliers de Germaine (KumQuat)
At the end of 2013, the agency specializing in architectural and landscape design created an artistic room, Up There, which transported guests to the rooftops of Paris. In 2014, the Lyon duo, Mathieu Brison and Luc Voisin, was selected to design one of the two prestigious suites (47 m2), the Rococo Suite Luxury. A bit of 17th-century French opulence set against compacted snow, but with a slatted bed base and a real mattress made of reindeer hides! This year, they return with a very seventies suite, the Love Capsule.
No worries, in the rooms, from the double (or family) room decorated with ice furniture to the particularly spectacular luxury suite, the temperature never drops below -5°, and you will be equipped accordingly. Upon waking, enjoy hot lingonberry juice, a sauna session, and breakfast.
The Ice Hotel is open from December to mid-April.
When nature awakens, the walls begin to melt and return to the Torne River.
During the day, much of the hotel can be visited like a museum. On the agenda: ice sculpture and fishing on the frozen lake, sledding with huskies, expeditions to observe moose, a chapel of ice for weddings, and the Ice Bar (like in London and Stockholm).
