Unusual night in an industrial place in Amsterdam
Presentation
Practical information
Extend the story in Amsterdam.
On the lively main artery of Amsterdam that runs through the city from north to south, the Ink Hotel Amsterdam MGallery opened in the premises left vacant after the closure of the daily newspaper De Tidj (The Times) in 1974. Here we are in a lively district of Amsterdam's old town, just two minutes from Dam Square and the red-light district, yet just a step away from the main canals.
In other words, right in the center!
Behind this discreet and narrow facade, the city's most popular newspaper of the 20th century was written and printed. For the opening of this first MGallery hotel in the Netherlands, Sofitel hired the Amsterdam-based architectural firm Concrete to perpetuate the history of this industrial site transformed into a modern and characterful hotel: the Ink Hotel (ink in French).
The common thread of this successful conversion of an industrial building is the world of press and writing, as a nod to the pages of yesterday's newspaper and this new book that opened in 2015.
From the reception, large typesetting letters are displayed, symbols of this journalistic past. The former machine room has been transformed into a 'PressRoom' restaurant with shelves covered with glass inkwells, paper spools, and old machines. The menu is printed... on a newspaper, and the INK-credible cocktails are served at the 360° bar or around the fireplace in the adjacent lounge.
On the corridor walls, amusing maps of Amsterdam drawn by artist Jan Rothuizen guide us between monuments and anecdotes. On the doors of the 149 rooms and suites, small handwritten notes accompany our nights in a comfortable universe of wood and marble. Not to forget the brass, with very conceptual installations said to have been designed to preserve the fingerprints of passing visitors in this hotel. Will you leave yours here?
