Sleeping in a historical site in Italy
Presentation
Practical information
Once upon a time, there was a castle in Umbria...
Umbria, the 'green heart of Italy' and a land of history. On the road linking Perugia and Gubbio, two stunning medieval towns, stands an ancient site that has alternated between an impregnable fortress, a manor house, and an agricultural enterprise.
This is where, in 1422, Federico da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino, was born. A great Italian figure of the Renaissance, a condottiere -mercenary- in the service of the States.
From its hilltop perch, the castle overlooks the Chiascio plain and its magnificent hills, the ones that inspired Perugino* and Piero della Francesca in the 15th century.
While Gubbio, Assisi, and Orvieto are not far away, with such captivating scenery, hiking trails, and a pool surrounded by olive trees, it’s tempting to stay on-site and revel in the silence. Around the castle, 300 hectares of pasture for Italy’s oldest cattle breed -the Chianina-, oak trees, and... black truffles!
So, where do you sleep? In a room adorned with period furniture, exposed beams, engravings, or old paintings from the 18th century. Thirteen rooms and suites are spread across the buildings of Petroia. Even the Mastio -the keep- and its 12th-century walls are open to you. A moment of inattention, and you might feel like the lord of the manor...
