Practical information
The raw luxury of the troglodyte rooms of Matera in Puglia.
In Italy, on the way to Puglia, a sublime hotel has found its place in the oldest part of the village of Matera, famous for its troglodyte dwellings, the "Sassi", the stones in Italian.
The site of the Sassi and the park of the rock churches of Matera is the most remarkable and complete example of a set of troglodyte dwellings in the Mediterranean region, and as such has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. And Matera will be the future European Capital of Culture in 2019, so let's go quickly before the crowds flood the alleys.
The Sextantio le Grotte della Civita hotel comprises 18 timeless rooms and suites, monastic, set in large caves with old local furniture and bed linen made from beautiful antique fabrics.
The rooms and suites are spacious, some exceptionally sized, and lit by candlelight. All feature a bathtub by the fireplace in the room, the touch of modernity cleverly balanced, and a bathroom.
Breakfast is served in a common area, a former 13th-century church carved into the rock, with a restaurant specializing in regional cuisine: bread, pasta, cheese, vegetables in the Basilicata style.
As for the panoramic terrace, it overlooks the Murgia National Park, like the Cantina, room no. 20.
Splendid, this hotel is to be experienced as a couple, naturalmente.
