Work of art to explore

Practical information
When hiking and art collection come together.
On the side of Digne-les-Bains, an open-air contemporary art museum offers you the chance to spend a night in a work by Andy Goldsworthy.
Over the years, a true partnership has developed between the three initiators of a project blending territories, the Refuge d'Art project. Nadine Gomez, curator of the Gassendi Museum, Guy Martini, founder and director of the Geological Reserve of Digne-les-Bains, and Scottish artist Andy Goldsworthy propose a discovery itinerary combining natural heritage, rural heritage, and contemporary artistic creations.
The Sentinels, three dry stone cairns, are installed at the entrance to the reserve and its three valleys. Along the path connecting them—a 150 km hike if completed in full—six shelters house works by Andy Goldsworthy.
And three of these shelters are open for the night to those who request it. The museum hands over the key for free. The comfort is basic, but the essence lies elsewhere.
'The sculpture here is not just the stone, it's the house, it's the whole journey' Andy Goldsworthy.
For each of the shelters, a sculpture has been specifically designed, and the small rural habitat, thus restored, comes back to life thanks to the project. By clicking on the links, you will learn about the history and location of these Refuges d'Art.
It's up to you to decide where to start!
