Sleeping among huskies in Lapland
Presentation
Practical information
Far from everything: Norwegian Lapland, its huskies and its wooden cabins.
Beyond the Arctic Circle, in the north of Finland, Sweden, Norway, and on the Kola Peninsula in Russia, lives one of the last indigenous peoples of the Far North, the Saami. Their ecological knowledge is immense, their vocabulary to describe nature very rich, for example, they have more than 70 words to describe snow.
On this land of endless expanses, people come to immerse themselves in its desolate plateaus, admire its splendid landscapes, and perhaps be surprised by herds of reindeer.
In the Norwegian Far North, a few kilometers from the town of Karasjok, Sven Engholm has been developing since the 1970s a place to offer visitors an incredible setting to stay: the ten log cabins entirely built by his hands, with natural materials and decorated in a traditional way, all on his farm with about fifty husky dogs.
During the summer months, canoeing and hiking are popular pastimes. In winter, if there is one place to meet mushers or take a sled ride, it is undoubtedly here with all the experience of Sven Engholm. The lodge also provides Arctic clothing and food during longer expeditions on the snowy lands with your team of six dogs.
It should be noted that Sven Engholm is an 11-time winner of Europe's longest dog sled race, the 'Finnmarksløpet'. A host of reference!
