The house of the Little Island Lighthouse keeper
Presentation
Practical information
The intimate and unprecedented experience on an island at the end of the world.
To reach this lighthouse on its small rocky island in the Norwegian Sea, you must first get to the fishing village of Vinje in Bø, Vesterålen, which means you don’t just stumble upon it by chance!
Here, two hundred kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, far from everything except nature and its vastness, Elena Hansteensen has chosen to live all year round. She, who previously worked in the Middle East for the Norwegian Refugee Council at the UN, now lives on the island of Litløy where she divides her time between the local community of the archipelago (notably in charge of the mobile library) and her guests at the 'Little Island Lighthouse' (0.67 km2), 'Litløy fyr' in Norwegian.
Since acquiring LittleIsland Lighthouse in 2006, Elena has opened two double rooms in the keeper's house overlooking the sea, with views of the distant Lofoten Islands.
Staying on this authentic and secret island means adapting to the constraints of nature, embarking on adventures tracing the footsteps of the first inhabitants of the area -from the Stone Age-, visiting the 40-meter deep Troll cave dating back 100,000 years, meeting birds -perhaps by sea kayak-, observing orcas and whales that sometimes approach the island, going fishing, enjoying the incredible light of the midnight sun, the vast array of sky colors, reading, isolating oneself -or not-. And so many other pleasures inspired by this remote island.
..:: May 2021 ::.. Reopening of the lighthouse after significant renovation work in the lighthouse keeper's house.
