Royal Abbey of Fontevraud
Presentation
Practical information
From Gothic to the digital age, the hospitable tradition of the Royal Abbey spans nine centuries.
At the crossroads of Anjou, Touraine, and Poitou, with its four monasteries, this royal abbey has had a history as fascinating as it is complex.
After being a female monastic city—it was led by women for more than seven centuries!—and the most powerful in France, it experienced less glorious times. Under Napoleon, Fontevraud changed status and was transformed into an important prison. Since the mid-1970s, tourists have animated the corridors and cloisters; the Abbey innovates and charms with a rich cultural program. Original exhibitions, concerts, conferences, new technologies, fun events, or shows for varied audiences.
Cross the cloisters to reach the Prieuré Saint-Lazare, a monastery once dedicated to care. Successively dedicated to the care of lepers, the convalescence of nuns, and then an infirmary during the prison period, the new hotel has been offering, since June 2014, 54 rooms and suites, all overlooking the gardens. Contemporary and refined 4* with clean lines and beautiful materials.
Stripped-down luxury, a touch monastic but connected!
Each room has its own iPad, an interactive guide to the hotel and the abbey, a remote control for the TV, and a way to communicate with reception or room service...
In the chapel, far from the silent prayers of yesteryear, an iBar awaits you to enjoy some bubbles from Saumur or browse the digital media library through touch-screen tablets built into the furniture. History, games, and quizzes, learning about Fontevraud becomes enjoyable.
For dinner, head to the cloister and the chapter room. At the helm of the restaurant is young chef Thibaut Ruggeri, Bocuse d'Or 2013.
Let yourself be surprised in turn by this conventual complex, an experience to be lived in one of the landmarks of the Loire Valley listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
